Power Steering Fluid Service

Some vehicles use hydraulic fluid; others have electric steering. Confirm the system before planning a fluid service.

Hydraulic power steering uses fluid to provide steering assistance. Electric power steering does not use a hydraulic reservoir, so the service needs depend on the vehicle’s design.

On a hydraulic system, low fluid may indicate a leak and a noise may involve the pump, belt or another component. NOFO reviews the concern and the required fluid before recommending maintenance or repair. A sudden loss of steering assistance needs assessment before further travel.

Signs that bring vehicles in

  • A whining sound while turning the wheel
  • Steering that feels heavier at low speeds
  • Flutter or shudder in the wheel when turning while parked
  • Fluid seepage around the pump or rack

What the visit involves

  • Confirmation of hydraulic or electric steering equipment
  • Review of fluid requirements and visible leaks on hydraulic systems
  • A maintenance recommendation or separate diagnosis for heavy steering and noise

Diagnosis before authorization

A request does not guarantee a specific diagnosis, price or completion time. The shop confirms the appointment, explains findings and obtains authorization before repair work moves forward.

Common questions

Does every car need power steering fluid changes?

No. Electric steering systems do not have that fluid circuit. Hydraulic systems have their own fluid and maintenance requirements; provide the vehicle details so the applicable service can be confirmed.

Is adding fluid enough to stop a steering noise?

A low level may be a symptom of leakage, and noises can have other causes. The source should be evaluated instead of repeatedly topping up or adding a product that may not meet the vehicle’s specification.
