Heater Core Replacement

Weak heat, fogging and a damp carpet do not all have the same cause. Confirm the concern before a repair that may require significant interior access.

On vehicles with a coolant-fed cabin heater, the heater core transfers engine heat to air entering the passenger compartment. A leak or restricted flow may reduce performance, but controls, airflow and other cooling faults can also affect cabin heat.

NOFO evaluates the reported symptom before recommending core replacement. Mention whether the engine reaches normal temperature, whether coolant is disappearing and where any dampness appears. The vehicle’s layout determines the access and repair scope.

Signs that bring vehicles in

  • A wet passenger-side floor with a sweet smell
  • Fogging windows that coolant vapor worsens
  • Heat that works only while driving
  • Repeated unexplained coolant loss

What the visit involves

  • Review of cabin heat, coolant loss, odor and interior dampness
  • Evaluation of the heater core and relevant controls or cooling-system conditions
  • Explanation of access, coolant and related work if core replacement is indicated

Diagnosis before authorization

A request does not guarantee a specific diagnosis, price or completion time. The shop confirms the appointment, explains findings and obtains authorization before repair work moves forward.

Common questions

Does a wet passenger carpet prove the heater core is leaking?

No. Water can enter from other sources, including drainage or body leaks. Odor, fluid type and cooling-system evidence help distinguish a coolant leak from an unrelated water concern.

Can no heat be caused by something other than the core?

Yes. Airflow, temperature controls or engine-cooling conditions can affect heat output. Tell the shop whether air still blows normally and whether both sides of the cabin behave the same way.
