Diesel isn’t one test.

Diesel vehicles can have different inspection requirements depending on vehicle characteristics, registration and exemptions. Some use an onboard diagnostic emissions test; others require diesel smoke-opacity testing. We offer both, and will help identify which inspection applies to your vehicle.

Read the NY DMV diesel inspection guide

Which diesel inspection applies?

Light-duty OBD emissions testing

OBD testing reads the vehicle’s onboard emissions system. Eligibility includes vehicle weight rating, model year and exemptions. A light-duty diesel is not automatically exempt from emissions testing.

Heavy-duty smoke-opacity testing

Suffolk County is in New York’s Diesel Emissions Metropolitan Area. Non-exempt diesel vehicles registered in this area with registration maximum gross weight over 8,500 pounds require annual diesel emissions inspection alongside safety inspection.

Bring the right weight information

Maximum gross weight on the registration and the manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating are different values. Have both available if known, along with the registration county, so the shop can confirm which requirements and equipment apply.

A few helpful answers.

NYS vehicle inspection details
Can every diesel vehicle use the same inspection?

No. The appropriate inspection depends on the vehicle and the rules that apply to it. We offer light-duty and heavy-duty diesel inspections; share the year, make, model and registration details so the team can identify the required test.

Can I make an appointment or walk in?

Both are welcome. Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–7:00 PM; Saturday 9:00 AM–6:00 PM; Sunday closed. Latest arrival for an inspection or walk-in: Monday–Friday 6:30 PM; Saturday 5:30 PM. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before closing. The team confirms online appointment requests.

Can I wait at the shop?

Yes, you can wait while your inspection is completed. Call to discuss the expected wait, especially if you have a limited time window; inspection duration depends on the vehicle and the day's workload.

Is diesel inspection separate from vehicle safety inspection?

Diesel emissions testing and safety inspection requirements can apply to the same vehicle. We will help you confirm the appropriate inspection for your vehicle rather than assuming every diesel needs the same test.

What should I share before bringing a larger vehicle?

Share the vehicle configuration, registration county and weight information with the shop so the team can identify the appropriate inspection class. Add these details to your request if you are making an appointment.

Does being an older diesel automatically remove the smoke test?

No. DMV says model year alone does not exempt a vehicle from the diesel emissions inspection required within the metropolitan area. Exemptions and OBD rules are vehicle-specific; bring your registration details instead of relying only on age.
