Check Engine Light Diagnosis

A fault code identifies a starting point. Testing explains whether the cause is a sensor, wiring, a leak or another operating problem.

A check-engine light means the vehicle’s diagnostic system has detected a fault. The stored code and operating information help guide testing, but they are not a parts list. NOFO evaluates the reported symptom and relevant systems before discussing a repair.

Bring any previous diagnostic or emissions-inspection report, and mention recent repairs or battery disconnection. Clearing a light does not repair the cause and can reset emissions-readiness monitors. If the light flashes or the engine runs severely rough, stop safely and contact the shop before continuing.

Signs that bring vehicles in

  • A steady check-engine light that will not clear
  • A flashing light (call before driving further)
  • Rough running, hesitation or stalling alongside the light
  • Failed or upcoming emissions inspection

What the visit involves

  • Review of the warning, symptoms, stored fault information and relevant operating data
  • Tests chosen to distinguish the reported fault from its possible causes
  • Repair findings explained separately from any subsequent inspection or readiness check

Diagnosis before authorization

A request does not guarantee a specific diagnosis, price or completion time. The shop confirms the appointment, explains findings and obtains authorization before repair work moves forward.

Common questions

Why is a code read different from a diagnosis?

A code reports what a system detected. Testing checks why it happened: for example, a sensor-related code may involve its wiring or the condition being measured. Diagnosis connects that information to a repair recommendation.

Should I clear the light before an inspection?

No. Clearing codes can reset the readiness monitors, and it does not correct the fault. Bring the inspection report if you have one so the shop can distinguish a repair need from incomplete monitoring.

What should I include in my service request?

Give the exact warning, whether it is steady or flashing, and any rough running, stalling or loss of power. Include when it began and recent work; do not drive solely to reproduce a serious symptom.
