Transfer Case Fluid Service

A transfer case has its own service requirements. Tell us about drive-mode warnings, leaks or binding as well as routine maintenance needs.

A transfer case distributes drive to the front and rear axles on vehicles equipped with one. Its lubricant and maintenance schedule can differ from those for the transmission or differentials, even on the same truck or SUV.

NOFO reviews the drivetrain configuration and service history before planning a fluid change. Binding on turns or a four-wheel-drive warning may need diagnosis of controls, tires or mechanical components; maintenance alone should not be assumed to resolve it.

Signs that bring vehicles in

  • Binding, hop or driveline shudder during tight low-speed turns
  • Whining or growling that changes with drive mode
  • Leakage around the transfer case housing
  • A mileage interval for transfer case service has arrived

What the visit involves

  • Confirmation that the vehicle has a serviceable transfer case and identification of its fluid requirements
  • Review of previous service, leaks and drive-mode concerns
  • Explanation of the proposed maintenance and any separate diagnostic findings

Diagnosis before authorization

A request does not guarantee a specific diagnosis, price or completion time. The shop confirms the appointment, explains findings and obtains authorization before repair work moves forward.

Common questions

Does every AWD vehicle use the same transfer case fluid?

No. AWD and 4WD layouts vary, and a vehicle may use a different type of power-transfer unit. Provide the year, make, model and drivetrain so the correct component and specification can be identified.

Is this included in a transmission fluid change?

These are separate components with separate requirements. Add both services to your request if you want them reviewed, and the shop will explain which maintenance applies before confirming the scope.
